    Nazaré

Nazaré is widely acclaimed as the most picturesque seaside town in Portugal.

A fascinating fusion of the traditional and modern, it satisfies all the needs of the contemporary holiday maker within a very Portuguese environment, far removed from the typical mass tourist destination.

The vast golden sandy beach is backed by an impressive new promenade, which together with the narrow cobbled streets of the town are dominated by magnificent steep cliffs, set above a beautifully bright blue ocean.

Due largely to improvements in the motorway infrastructure, Nazaré has only been   "discovered" relatively recently by northern Europeans. It is not only a popular summer resort for the Portuguese, but also an important fishing town. As such, it is "open all year", providing a great holiday experience for even the most out of season visitor.

The main town by the beach (Praia) is linked to the historical cliff top village of Sitio by a funicular railway. The 110 meter high ride itself is spectacular, while the panoramic views from the top are truly breathtaking!

A brief history of Nazaré, together with other useful information, can be found on the official municipal website at  www.cm-nazare.pt .

Eating and Drinking

The majority of cafes/bars and retaurants are small family run enterprises, with food predominately focused on fresh local fish and seafood produce - although meat dishes are widely available. For variety, there is also an Irish Bar and a Chinese Restaurant. Takeaways concentrate on pizza and frango (tasty grilled chicken), which is also available from the local supermarkets.

Fresh fish, vegatables and fruit are available at the daily municipal market, comple-
mented by the extensive range of food, wine and general products on offer at the modern Modelo and Pingo Doce supermarkets.
